THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS by Rebecca Skloot

The New Book is called, THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS by Rebecca Skloot.  I am super excited to read it.  I will update everyone when it gets closer to the time to have our meeting.  I heard it went well.  I was SO BUMMED I missed it.

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells—taken without her knowledge—became one of the most important tools in medicine. The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, they are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than sixty years. If you could pile all HeLa cells ever grown onto a scale, they’d weigh more than 50 million metric tons—as much as a hundred Empire State Buildings. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects; helped lead to important advances like in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold by the billions.

Book for April

So...I think...or I hope most of you know about our book club by now.  It was something that didnt last when we tried last summer so my HOPE is that we can get this going and it will last for a while.  My Moms ward has been doing their book club for over 6 years.  I would love that.  So what we are going to try, is having our Book Club on Wednesdays at NOON at the church.  We will try that for now and see how that goes.  If everyone can bring an appetizer or hors d'oeuvre or finger food of some sort...or whatever you want and the recipe, that will be our food.  I will provide the paper products and we can have water to drink, unless someone wants to volunteer to bring a drink.
Now on to the book.  We are reading The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom.  Please let me know if you have any suggestions.  Also please let everyone you know about our book club.  I don't have everyones email address and i would hate to leave anyone out :)
I am excited...i hope it will work out this time!

We are attempting to get this book club going again.  I have some ideas that I hope will make it a lasting book club.  My moms ward has been doing their book club for over 6 years now.  She has shared some ideas with me that they do and it seems like it should work.  I will share them with you at our meeting.  I have created a Facebook group and I hope we can get lots of ladies to come.  Please tell everyone you visit teach about our book club.  I would hate to leave anyone out....it's not a good feeling.  So I am excited to get this going again and hopefully have success doing it!

HELLO

Welcome to the Club!  We are excited that we finally got this Book Club going!  You can come here for updates and who, where, what and when, info if you ever forget (which I am very prone to do).  I will give everyone access (when I figure out how) to this blog so anyone can post.
